The Amato Family

This past September, local Charlotte residents Katherine and James Amato experienced a small taste of what no parent wants to go through – a child needing more care to feel better than what they could provide at home. They rushed their 4-month-old daughter Lillia to Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital when she was having difficulty breathing. After being stabilized by the Emergency Department staff, they were admitted to the pediatric floor for a few nights.

Though the couple lived in Charlotte, they still found themselves in a bind. Having rushed to the hospital without so much as a phone charger, they worried about leaving Lillia for even an hour to pick up toiletry items. That’s when they discovered the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Caroline’s Corner.”Early that morning I ventured out to the Family Room to find us some coffee and was greeted by a lovely volunteer. Immediately, my stress level improved just by a friendly face and a calming space. The volunteer showed me around, any food and drink you could think of, and informed me about the laundry and shower availability. I was blown away by the amenities available to us – and at no charge at all. I picked out a book for my daughter and a stuffed animal from the Happy Wheels cart. We couldn’t be more appreciative of RMHC of GC and their mission.” Katherine explained.Your support has allowed us to REACH FURTHER for families like the Amatos by offering services outside the walls of the House through our newest hospital programs – the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Caroline’s Corner and the Happy Wheels carts. Offering these resources to families just outside their child’s hospital room truly keeps families close when they need it most.
