This Mother’s Day, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Charlotte honors moms like Julie Holmes, women who find strength and purpose in adversity.
Julie, a devoted mother and Mrs. South Carolina, knows firsthand the overwhelming fear that comes when a child is suddenly ill. When her son Mason was just 11 months old, he was hospitalized twice in a single month with serious respiratory issues. “It was terrifying,” Julie recalls. “I was exhausted, running on empty, and scared out of my mind.”
That’s when she found comfort in an unexpected place, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Caroline’s Corner in Hemby Children’s Hospital, a space designed to bring relief to families in crisis directly on the hospital floor. “A nurse sent me to the Family Room to get a cup of coffee. I had no idea how much more I’d receive,” she says. “A volunteer offered me books, toys, socks, snacks, things I didn’t even know I needed in that moment. That simple act of kindness changed everything.”
From that day forward, Julie knew she had to give back. Today, she serves as a dedicated Family Room volunteer. “I can relate to the moms and families who walk through those doors. I’ve been in their shoes,” she says. “I can only hope I can provide them with a source of comfort during such a difficult time.”
When Julie competed for the title of Mrs. South Carolina America, there was never a question of what her platform would be: she proudly stands as an advocate and voice for RMHC of Greater Charlotte.
