As we observe National Heart Month this February, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible journeys of families whose lives have been touched by heart-related diagnoses. At the RMHC of Greater Charlotte, we are proud to have provided 2,888 nights of comfort and support to families like the Stroups in 2024.
Kaitlyn and Austin Stroup’s son, Samuel, was born in February 2023 in Rochester, NY. Samuel faced a series of tests that ultimately led to a diagnosis of Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS), a severe congenital heart defect where the right side of the heart is underdeveloped, including the complete absence of the pulmonary valve. This condition severely restricts blood flow to the lungs and requires immediate and ongoing medical care.
Driven by love and advocacy, Kaitlyn reached out to Levine Children’s Hospital, where doctors agreed to take on Samuel’s rare and complex case. While Kaitlyn traveled to North Carolina with Samuel, Austin and their family relocated from Rochester to Concord, to be closer to Samuel’s care, knowing that their journey was far from over. Despite being closer to home, the Stroups continue to navigate a difficult path. Samuel is currently on the heart transplant 1A list, and his parents are waiting for the life-saving news that will give their son a chance at a healthier future.
For the past 168 nights, Kaitlyn and Austin have called the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Charlotte their home away from home. During this time, they have drawn strength from the kindness and compassion of our community. “It’s a joy coming here and knowing that we have a place to feel loved, feel like family, and be supported,” Austin shared.
As we honor National Heart Month, we celebrate the unwavering resilience of families like the Stroups. RMHC of GC is here to ensure that no family has to face the challenges of caring for a critically ill child alone.
This month, we stand in solidarity with all those battling heart conditions, and we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for families like Samuel’s, who continue to hold on to hope for a brighter tomorrow.
