Individual & Youth Opportunities

Volunteer Interest Meetings

Volunteer interest meetings include a short overview of our mission, programs, and a tour of the House for individual adults 18 years and older, discussing volunteer responsibilities, application, and training.

Meetings are held on the:

  • First and third Thursdays of the month 10:30am-11:30am
  • First and third Thursdays of the month 6:00pm-7:00pm
  • First Saturday of the month, 10:00am-11:00am

House Operations Volunteer

This role is open to those aged 18 and older who wish to take on a leadership-level role in the House. House Operations Volunteers (HOV) work the front desk, answer phones, set up guest rooms, assist with cleaning, give tours, and assist guests. After becoming an HOV, you also have the option to be a Family Room or Happy Wheels individual volunteer.

Time Commitment: 36 hours per year (12 shifts), minimum.

Family Room Volunteer

RMHC of GC is currently looking for community volunteers who are aged 18+ for our Family Room at Caroline’s Corner in Hemby Children’s Hospital. To become a Family Room volunteer, you must first meet the following criteria: 

  1. Attend a Volunteer Interest Meeting
  2. Complete and pass a background check 
  3. Complete one volunteer shadow shift at the RMHC House (3 hours total) 
  4. Complete one regular volunteer shift at the RMHC House (3 hours total) 
  5. Complete hospital onboarding training (will receive training information on RMHC)

*Please note that this volunteer opportunity is at our local Charlotte hospitals. You will not report to the RMHC House after your training shifts, you will report directly to the hospital you are volunteering at on your assigned shift.

Happy Wheels Volunteer

RMHC of GC is currently looking for community volunteers who are aged 18+ to help stock and push the Happy Wheels carts. To become a Happy Wheels volunteer, you must first meet the following criteria: 

  1. Attend Volunteer Interest Meeting
  2. Complete and pass a background check 
  3. Complete one volunteer shadow shift at the RMHC House (3 hours total) 
  4. Complete one regular volunteer shift at the RMHC House (3 hours total) 
  5. Complete hospital onboarding training (you will receive training information on RMHC)

Pet Therapy Volunteer

A limited number of spaces are available for certified dogs to come and visit with guest families at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Charlotte. We are currently accepting applications for a variety of pets, rabbits, dogs, cats, birds, etc.

Young Professionals (YP)

Join a group of young philanthropic, professional, individuals between 21-40 years old, who support the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Charlotte by:

  • Directly serving RMHC guest families through volunteer activities.
  • Representing RMHC of Greater Charlotte at community events.
  • Members participate in volunteer activities, happy hours, and other events to network with other like-minded individuals and engage with the RMHC mission.

Membership & Benefits

  • Receive RMHC swag and merchandise.
  • Access to monthly events which may include volunteer activities, socials and/or fundraising events. 
  • Networking opportunities with RMHC of GC Board of Directors, major donors, and other young professionals.

Teen Volunteer Board

Teen Volunteer Board for 11th-12th Grade Only
The Teen Volunteer Board is a leadership group comprised of rising juniors and seniors who serve as ambassadors of our House in their school and community. Our Teen Volunteer Board meets twice a month from September – April. Teen Volunteer Board requires an application and may require an interview. (Application period has closed for the 2023/2024 season)

Last Minute Meal Assistance

Sometimes meal teams must cancel at the last minute and we need extra helping hands to provide the evening meal.

Time Commitment: Approximately 3 hours per meal

“Year of Love” Program

This program is an on-going opportunity that volunteers of any age can join at any point in the year. We have determined our greatest needs and have designated a different activity or donation for every month.

This is a great way for students and families to support RMHC of GC on a regular basis. Whether you complete an activity for one month or 12 months, you’re providing valuable support to our guest families. We welcome having you at our House when making a delivery between 8:00am – 8:00pm, 7 days a week, throughout the month. Contact Samira Loganathan at samira@rmhclt.org with questions.

Group Volunteer & Meal Team Opportunities

Dinner Crews

Dinner Crews (4:00pm-7:30pm)

  • Every Night, 365 days a year
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 6
  • Schedule: Arrive at 3:30pm-4:00pm, Prep/Cook at 4:00pm-5:30pm, Serve at 5:30pm-7:00pm, Pack leftovers and clean up at 7:00pm-7:30pm.
  • Number to feed: 30-35 (GVM will continue to update 1-2 weeks in advance) 
  • What to make? THREE OPTIONS:
    • Cook & Serve: Plan a menu, purchase your ingredients, and then use our fully equipped kitchen to prepare and serve dinner. Our guest families would appreciate some vegetarian options as part of dinner, please.
    • Buy & Serve: You may buy premade or prepackaged food from a grocery store/restaurant/caterer, such as rotisserie chickens, lasagnas, deli meat, and prep and serve here. No food made at home please.
    • Order Delivery: If you’re pinched for time or cooking is just not your thing, you may cater a meal and serve or just order delivery from a restaurant such as Domino’s. We appreciate you providing the meal in any way possible.
  • Dinner suggestions from families: BBQ, Enchiladas, Cheesesteaks, Fried Chicken, Stir Fry, Pot Roast, Sausage Dogs, Chicken & Dumplings, Kebabs, Hawaiian Roll Sliders, Meatloaf, Soup & Grilled Cheese, Stuffed Peppers, Meatballs, Baked Ham, Jambalaya, Ribs, Pitas, Baked Potato Bar

Breakfast Crews (8:00am-10:30am)

  • Saturday & Sunday Only
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 6
  • Schedule: Schedule: Arrive at 8:00am, Prep/Cook at 8:00am-9:00am, Serve at 9:00am-10:00am, Pack leftovers and clean up at 10:00am-10:30am. NOTE: Our doors open at 8:00am. Please DO NOT arrive before 8:00am.
  • Number to feed: 20-25
  • What to make? THREE OPTIONS:
    • Cook & Serve: Plan a menu, purchase your ingredients, and then use the House’s fully equipped kitchen to prepare and serve breakfast.
    • Buy & Serve: You may purchase premade or prepackaged food from a grocery store/restaurant/caterer, and prep and serve here. No homemade food please.
    • Order Delivery: If you’re pinched for time or cooking is just not your thing, feel free to order breakfast items from a restaurant and have it delivered by 8:30am.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations hurt our families. Please opt to have food delivered if you must cancel and notify Group Volunteer Manager Samira Loganathan at least 48 hours before the scheduled date.

  • Wednesday Only
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 6
  • Schedule: Arrive at 10:00am, Prep/Cook at 10:00am-11:00am, Serve at 1100am-12:00pm, Pack leftovers and clean up at 12:00pm-12:30pm.
  • Number to feed: 20-25 (GVM will continue to update 1-2 weeks in advance)
  • What to make? THREE OPTIONS:
    • Cook & Serve: Plan a menu, purchase your ingredients, and then use the House’s fully equipped kitchen to prepare and serve brunch.
    • Buy & Serve: You may purchase premade or prepackaged or frozen food from a grocery store/restaurant/caterer, and prep and serve here. No food made at home please.
    • Order Delivery: If you’re pinched for time or cooking is just not your thing, feel free to order breakfast items from a restaurant and have it delivered by 8:30am.
  • Brunch suggestions from families: Breakfast casseroles, Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Country Ham, Biscuits & Gravy, Pancakes/Waffles, Fresh Fruit, Cinnamon Buns, Quiche, Bagels, Omelet Bar, Muffins, Yogurt Parfaits
  • You may also cater brunch and serve.

Cookie Crews
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 4
  • Sat-Sun: 1:00pm-3:00pm
  • Mon-Fri (No Wednesday):  10:30am-12:30pm
  • Number of cookies: 6-7 dozen
  • Plan what you’ll bake, bring your ingredients and use our fully equipped kitchen to make the treats! Cookies do not need to be made from scratch. Feel free to use premade dough, boxed cookie mix, frozen cookie dough, but nothing made at home please. You’re welcome to make any kind of sweet treat such as rice krispie treats or brownies.

AGE POLICY: Cookie Team members must be at least 14 years old. There must be at least one adult (21 years or older) per group and that adult must serve as team leader and point of contact.

Casserole Crews

Casserole Crews (1:00pm-3:00pm)

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 6
  • Schedule: Arrive at 1:00pm, Prep/Cook/Assemble freezable casseroles at 1:00pm-2:30pm, Clean up at 2:30pm-3:00pm. Casseroles DO NOT need to be baked or served. We will freeze them to use on a night when there is no Dinner Team.
  • Number & Size of Casseroles: 4-5 casseroles in 9×13 disposable foil pans. Our guest families would appreciate 1 casserole to be vegetarian, please.
  • What to make? THREE OPTIONS:
    • Cook & Assemble: Plan what you’ll make, purchase your ingredients and then use the House’s fully equipped kitchen to prepare and assemble the casseroles.
    • Buy & Assemble: Purchase premade or prepackaged food from a grocery store/restaurant/caterer, such as rotisserie chickens, premade meatballs, shredded potatoes and assemble the casseroles in our kitchen.
    • Buy & Drop Off: If you’re pinched for time and are unable to assemble casseroles in our kitchen, feel free to buy and drop off fresh or frozen casseroles purchased at a grocery store/restaurant/caterer.
  • House Favorites: Chicken Pot Pie, Hashbrown Casserole, Enchiladas, Lasagna, Shepherd’s Pie, Rice and Chicken Casserole, Pizza Casserole, Broccoli Cheddar Casserole, Chicken Tortilla Bake, Cheeseburger Casserole

Activity Nights
  • Schedule (Mondays & Wednesdays):  5:30pm-7:00pm
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 4
  • For bingo, we provide the ball, cage, and cards while you bring the prizes. Our guest families love gift cards as prizes (Target/Chickfila/Amazon). We also have Jenga and several other board games if you would like to host a game night. For all other activities such as face painting, story time, music trivia, and arts & craft night, please bring all supplies. We have a limited supply of crayons, markers, glue sticks, scissors, etc. Thank you!

Cleaning Crews
  • Schedule: (Tues-Fri) at 12:00pm-2:00pm or 1:00pm-3:00pm
  • Contact Group Volunteer Manager to schedule
  • Maximum Number of Volunteers: 6
  • We supply the cleaning tools and you supply the materials and the people to help! Groups will be assigned an area of the House to deep clean. We may need your help inside or outside the House. Contact Samira Loganathan at samira@rmhclt.org directly to schedule cleaning crews.
